More Fall Colors at Creamer's Field

On Friday I started my walk to Wander Lake through the back fields at Creamer's Field.  See Fall Wander Lake Reflections.  You can see there is a lot more color at the field and on the hills behind compared with the shot in the header that was taken on the 16th.

From the front you can see that some trees have already lost their leaves, while some are still clinging to green.

The colors across the back fields were gorgeous.

Flying high above I spotted a couple of birds, too high to tell what they were until I got home and could look on the computer.

The previous Saturday, September 21, I was by the field in the morning and took a couple of quick shots as the sun peeked through the clouds and illuminated the fronts of the barns.

Oh, and the birds I saw flying up high are another clue to the surprise I saw at Wander Lake.  I'm thinking I should have been there just a little bit earlier!  I'll post those Wander Lake photos in the next day or two.

Fall Wander Lake Reflections

A few weeks ago I posted some reflection shots that I took at Wander Lake.  Click HERE to go to that post.  I've been looking for a sunny day to go back to capture some fall colors.  Yesterday was mostly sunny and a little windy, but the temperature was up to 55 degrees.  My perennial flower bed needed to be cut back and there were other chores shouting at me.  Well, what could I do?  Of course I closed my ears to the shouts and headed out the door with my camera.  There are only a few fleeting days before the snow will be on the ground and you have to take advantage of nice weather when you can.

Because of the wind the reflections weren't quite as clear as the previous visit.  I walked around the lake and on the far side the water was out of the wind and provided some better reflections.

There was an even better surprise at the lake that made me happy I went.  If you look closely you can get a glimpse of it in a couple of the photos.  Stay tuned......

Secluded Barn

This is another barn we saw near McMinnville, Oregon, in early October last year.  We're well into fall here and flirting with winter, so it's nice to step back and see something a little different for a while.

And with a few filters added.....

A New Set of Wheels

A few weeks ago Marty acquired a used dump truck from a friend.  It was slated to be taken to the dump because it wasn't running right, but he did a few repairs and installed a new battery, and voila, almost as good as new.  It certainly made a little girl happy!

Of course, as with any used vehicle, it required a little bit of tinkering, and the new driver needed a bit of instruction.

I think she liked her first driving lesson!

Ssss......

Last night the weather forecast called for mixed rain and snow, but it wouldn't stick on the ground.  This morning we got up to.....

However, by 2:30 it looked like.....

Tonight's forecast says no snow.  I wonder if they'll get it right this time--or will there be two inches of snow on the ground in the morning?  Ah, well, in a few weeks the snow will be here to stay and we won't see the ground again until sometime next April.  I guess I'll have to get a little more serious about my garden cleanup--perhaps next week....

Fall Colors at Creamer's Field

Fall colors are more prominent in Fairbanks now, as you can see in these photos I took at Creamer's Field this afternoon.

We had a light frost Saturday night, enough to get the more tender plants, like the Sunflowers that are planted in front of the old farmhouse.  The garden recreates how the Creamer's garden was planted back when this was a producing dairy.

The hills behind the barns are showing a lot of color....

.....and Canada Geese are still coming through on their migration south.

Saturday morning a few low clouds gave the barns a bit of atmosphere.  That bit of frost Saturday night gave the trees a bit of a kick start.  You can see lots more color in just two days, and the tree on the right side of the barn has dropped a lot of leaves.

Today might have been the last sunny day for a while.  The weather forecast has that "S" word in it, the one no one wants to hear this time of year.  The temps are predicted to be in the low 40s during the day and below freezing at night, with chances of mixed rain and snow.  We should have several weeks though before the snow is here for the winter.  I think I'll keep my head in the sand and hope we'll still get a bit of Indian summer.....

Musk Ox Matriarchs

A few weeks ago I visited the Musk Ox Farm with my son and his family.  It was raining lightly, but the cooler weather was much appreciated by the musk oxen.  That heavy coat is designed for really cold weather, and our warm summer was not very comfortable for them.

They really aren't very large, as you can see in the photo below.

The lighting wasn't the greatest, but adding a poster edges filter brought out more detail.  The two musk oxen here are the old ladies of the group, and they love willow branches!

I loved watching them devour the willow branches!
