In a Far Away Place

Although I never left town, I may have seemed to have been in a far away place this week.  In October of 2011 we really were far from home, some 3100 miles or so in New York State.  When we visited the Hudson River Valley and Frederic Church's home, Olana, it felt even further away, both in miles and time.  Approaching the house, you get a feel for what lies ahead when you walk along the intricate fencing.

You may have heard of the Hudson River School.  It was a mid-19th century art movement that included many landscape painters who painted scenes of the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area.  Frederic Church, 1826-1900, was one of those artists.  He painted many scenes of the Hudson River Valley, but his crowning achievement was Olana, the Persian inspired mansion he built on his property overlooking the Hudson River.  It was completed in 1890.

Sadly, no pictures were allowed inside the house, but it is every bit as fascinating as the outside, and in much the same style.

The house is absolutely fantastic, but what takes your breath away is the view from the house of the Hudson River Valley.

Visible from Olana is the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, a cantilever truss bridge built in 1935.  I wonder what Mr. Church would have thought if he looked out his window and saw a bridge crossing the Hudson.  I have a feeling he would not have approved.

The photo of the bridge is my Index No. 1031, which was the number this week for Gaelyn's Foto Friday Fun 83.

Autumn Reflections

These shots were taken the same day as the last post while we were in the Hudson River Valley in New York on October 25th, 2011.  These are of the lake at Olana, the home of Frederic Edwin Church, one of the Hudson River School artists.

Hudson River Valley Farm

I took these photos of this lovely farmyard on October 25th, 2011, while we were traveling in the beautiful Hudson River Valley in New York.

Somewhere in New York

When we are traveling I end up taking a lot of drive-by shots, especially of old barns.  Sometimes they turn out very well, and other times not well at all.  Sometimes you get a scene that you really like, but the focus just isn't quite right, as in this scene I snapped while we were driving along one of the smaller highways in New York last October.

It's fun to do a bit of experimenting with that kind of photo.  Then the hard part is choosing which version you like best.

A Second Chance

As we were heading east in early October on Route 20 in New York we were looking for a place to stay as it was close to getting dark.  We passed this wonderful old barnyard at a busy intersection and I was only able to get one quick shot.  It was one of those barns that you really want to spend some time at, but this stretch of road didn't have many motels, and so we needed to keep going.  As luck would have it, just a very little ways up the road we found a delightful little spot to stay.  Click HERE to go to that post.

And so I had a second chance!  The next morning was bright and sunny, and we went back up the road to the barn.  I was able to get out of the car and take my time.  I think this is my favorite barn that we saw on our month-long roadtrip in the NE.

Going around the barns to the left behind the silo was this barn.

And then on around to the back side of the barns.

Adding to the charm of the morning the fields around me as I took the photos were gorgeous.

Roadside Barn

Route 20 in New York gave me a lot of drive-by barn shots.  Here's another one we passed on the fly.

And, again, I had to play around a bit.....

Just Up the Road in NY

This New York barnyard was about an hour up the road from last week's barn and is another drive-by.  Their sign says Certified Organic and it looks like they've got a lovely garden growing.

One of the shots didn't have any posts or power lines showing, so it seemed to be a good candidate for an old photo.

Pine Grove Farm

We're back again on the road in early October in New York with some more drive-by shots of a barn we passed.

Check out the decoration on the top of the silos.  Because the photo below is cropped heavily, it's lost some clarity, but it's obvious the owners are proud of Pine Grove Farm.

And one last drive-by shot out the back window showing the other end of the barn.

So many of the lovely barns that are featured on Tricia's Barn Charm are worthy of being a jigsaw puzzle, so I thought I would try this one out.
