Along The Alcan

I posted some photos recently of a mini road trip to Anchorage, but today I'm digging into my archives and going back to 2009 when we took a wee bit longer road trip.  We left Fairbanks on September 28th and got back home on November 12th.  We traveled down the Alcan Highway, through Canada into Montana, down to Yellowstone, east to Kansas City, along Route 66 to California, up to Seattle, and then north again to Fairbanks.  I took a lot of photos on that trip, and so it's no surprise that two of them popped up when I searched my files for Index No. 1688 for Gaelyn's Foto Friday Fun No. 110.  The first was on September 30th traveling south through northern British Columbia.

The second was taken on November 11th, traveling north into the Yukon Territory.

There are many miles of spectacular scenery along the Alcan, but maybe the most beautiful is along the stretch of road we covered on September 30th.

I posted photos all along that trip, and you can check out the posts for those two days HERE and HERE.  You can also read more of the posts from that trip under my Blog Archive under 2009, September 28th through November 13th.

I am also linking up with Eileen's Saturday's Critters.

Buffalo in British Columbia

Backing up a little bit, here are some more shots of the buffalo that we saw in British Columbia when we were traveling down the Alcan.

Down the Alcan: Buffalo to Hot Springs to Dawson Creek

Yesterday morning we started out at Watson Lake. In the morning we saw lots of buffalo along the road. I was about 15 feet from this guy. Needless to say, I did not get out of the pickup! They totally ignored us, but..... It was a beautiful day for a drive. There was patchy fog, but it was a beautiful day. We stopped off at Liard Hot Springs and enjoyed a nick soak in the hot water. The temperature was about 35 degrees but the sun was shining and the water was warm and it was wonderful. We only were in the water about 20 minutes, which is all the time they recommend because of the water temperature, but it was a very relaxing break. We came across some stone goats on the road. They are very reluctant to get off for traffic, but when a big semi came along they scrambled to the side of the road.
We were still in the mountains and again there was snow along the road a good share of the way.
We saw a couple of different groups of caribou. This was a small group of three.
Before we dropped out of the mountains we had a beautiful view to the valley far below.
We dropped into the valley at Fort Nelson where we spent the night.
The map shows our journey yesterday, and then we picked it up this morning and were on to Dawson Creek this morning.
We arrived there this afternoon. Dawson Creek is the end of the Alcan--or the beginning, depending on which way you start from.
Tonight we are at Fox Creek, which is about 150 miles north of Edmonton. In the morning we'll continue on through the plains of Alberta. We will probably cross the border into the U.S. Saturday morning, and then on to Mona and Don's in Hinsdale, Montana. From time to time, I'll post more photos from the Alcan. I took lots! More roadtrip photos to come.
